Neato XV-11 Product Review: Neatoooooooooooo! Who Knew Vacuuming Could Be Fun (With Laser Guided Neato XV-11 Robotic Vacuum Cleaner)
July 27, 2010 • Atlanta, GA USA – Neatoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
On a scale of 1 to 10: my new, first-off-of the production line* Neato XV-11 All Floor Robotic Vacuum System
is an 11. It’s an understatement to say, I am thrilled with my Neato that arrived Tuesday, July 13th. Who knew that vacuuming could be so much fun.
In the last few months, my wife and I noticed that she had been coughing a lot in the bedroom, so we (or I should really say she) did a deep clean of the bedroom: tumbled-dusted the curtains in the dryer; vacuumed under the bed (with our Oreck XL PRO PLUS Vacuum that we also love for its light weight and deep cleaning); changed the bed liner (already hypo-allergenic); removed dust gathering magazines: you get the picture. While the bedroom felt much cleaner, she was still coughing intermittently. So, perhaps she needed to visit an allergist.
Then, “I” vacuumed the bedroom with my Neato XV-11 (including under the bed). I couldn’t believe how much dirt was in the dirt bin. So, “I” immediately vacuumed the bedroom with Neato a second time, and, while not as much dirt, enough that I ran Neato two more times: four times in all. The result: my wife no longer coughs in the bedroom. Period. That’s huge! My wife agrees that Neato’s best feature is its ability to vacuum under our bed (and do a deep clean of the carpets. (A close second is that “I” vacuum more more frequently!) We love that Neato does base boards, corners and cleans around bed legs and support posts. It just works!
I suspect that even if Neato hadn’t done such a great job in the bedroom, I’d still love it for its geek-chic appeal. I’m a (relatively) early adopter of new technology. I have an iPhone 4 (love it); I have a Flip UltraHD Camcorder (loved it ’til I got the iPhone 4); had two Tivos shortly after Flip UltraHD Camcorder
(loved it) was introduced (until we switched to AT&T U-verse U450 with highest internet speed possible (love the service; hated the seven truck-rolls for installation); bought a Pioneer Elite Blu-Ray player with Pioneer Elite 50″ HD shortly after its introduction (5x the cost of today’s better version); got an Apple TV
(love it) not to long after it was introduced; Netflix; switched my GREAT! Agency to Macs from PCs in 1988. Plus, we’ve started a Geek Night – not Greek Night – show-and-tell dinner party for our other Geek-chic friends. You get the picture.
That’s a long way of saying, it’s fun to watch Neato vacuum. (“I am” vacuuming now.) Press the start button, and Neato comes alive. First, Neato starts out slowly to get the “lay of the land” and then – those nice, neat(o) rows that gives the carpet a “racked” look like a lawn that has been professionally cut. Plus, “I” can vacuum while we’re out to dinner. In my home office, about the size of four bedrooms, Neato needs to re-charge once to complete the space. That said, Neato “knew” it needed to re-charge (in its charging based station); re-charged and remembered where it left off to finish the cleaning – all on its own. “I” vacuum frequently, now that we’ve got Neato. (Hopefully, I still get household “points” for vacuuming!) You can get the Neato specs; see videos; and answers to frequently asked questions on the Neato Robotics home page. Below this video is more on my first-person experience vacuuming with Neato.
[Video: To get this "Neato-Cam" video, I mounted my FLIP HD Ultra to the top of the Neato XV-11.]
The first time “I” vacuumed, I wasn’t sure if the laser-guided Neato would be misguided by my movements in the room. (So far, my sense is that I am free to wander the room while Neato vacuums: just not get in its “face” …)
I mentioned that I received Neato on a Tuesday. I held off until that weekend to take it out of the box (that’s five years in Geek years) figuring that I would have to do some assembly; and, (aghast) read the manual ’cause this was new, new technology that would be hard to figure-out and use. Guys and their high-tech gadgets. It takes so little to entertain us. It’s part of our DNA. Well, I couldn’t be more wrong about ‘our” new Neato. Getting started with Neato, was as easy as … 1-2-3:
- Charge Neato into the charging base station
- Fully charge (solid green light) Neato before “you” start vacuuming
- Press START to wake-up Neato and then press START again to vacuum. Now that’s out-of-the-box thinking! (And, beautifully and safely packaged.)
I do recommend reading the 50-page (big print) manual. It’s a fun, helpful and light-read. “Though it may seem pet-like, do not bathe or otherwise submerge your Neato XV-11 vacuum in water. … It doesn’t mind being cleaned and groomed with a damp cloth, however.” (Thank you Neato Robotics for having a sense of humor!)
Neato doesn’t like curtains, so I used monster clips to “pin-up” our bedroom curtains before letting Neato do its thing. Plus, I picked up some small area rugs; and used the 15-foot Boundary Marker (included) to “rope-off” the ’spaghetti’ of cables under my desk in my office.
In an anthropomorphic moment, my wife asked me what name I would give “our” Neato. (She named her Cello … Monte … so it was a given that Neato would get a new name!) First, some backstory. I grew-up watching the “futuristic utopia” Hanna-Barbera animated TV series The Jetsens featuring “elaborate robotic contraptions” living in “Skypad Apartments in Orbit City” cleaned by “humanoid” Rosie the Robot Maid (XB-500). Rosie was – “an old demonstrator model hired by the Jetson family from U-RENT A MAID.” So, in an homage to Rosie the Robot Maid in The Jetsons, I’ve named “our” Neato … Rosie! (Not to be confused with, Rosie, one of my fashion and glamour photo shoot models.)
And, should our every-other-week housekeeper be concerned about her job being replaced? Not just yet. Among other things, Rosie doesn’t create a rose out of the end of the toilet paper. (Note to Neato Robotics Engineers: we’d love a robot that can change bed linens too please.)
So, after two weeks of Rosie vacuuming, here are some suggestions for Neato Robotics:
- Add an iPhone mount. I’d love to stream live video from our Neato XV-11. (Really! Geeks will inherit the Earth.) Or, now that I have an iPhone 4, add a FLIP HD mount so I can re-purpose my FLIP camcorder.
- Add a “detailing” kit. Ala Pimp My Ride on MTV and Trick My Truck on CMT, I would like to give Rosie some character.
- Offer prizes for YouTube videos featuring Neato. (I’d love to see a short-film of a housekeeper that arrives with her Neato; reads a magazine; and then leaves once Neato finishes cleaning. I wonder if someone has beat me to an eye-level view from the “cockpit” of the Neato. No doubt we’ll see unofficially sanctioned cat-riding-Neato videos on YouTube.) [I've had more than 1,000 views of my "Neato-Cam" videos on YouTube in less than two weeks!]
- License sounds – from R2-D2, C-3PO, Rosie the Robot Maid, The Robot in Lost in Space. When the sweeping brushes got stuck with an object (until I removed it), I would have loved to hear, “Warning Will Robinson. Warning! Warning! Warning!” Or, when Neato enters a room, it would be great to hear the “swish” of the doors opening/closing on Star Trek. Or, how about Dōmo arigatō, Mr. Roboto when Neato finishes vacuuming. License fees can “pay off” in buzz, word-of-mouth next generation Neatos …
- Create a design challenge for well-known designers. After showing off the designs at Fashion Week cleaning the cat walks, auction off the one-of-a-kind designs for the charity of each designer’s choice.
- Ship the Neato XV-11 with three extra filters (rather than just one) that need to be replaced every three months. “Your package includes extra filters,” says the Manual (page 42).
- Include Quick Response (QR) codes: 1) on the outside of the box [to help sell at retail]; 2) in the manual: 3) and on Neato. Scanning the codes on any smartphone would launch videos such as: how the laser-based room positioning system works (ala the videos that are on the Neato Robotics home page); Neato Robotics YouTube Channel and media coverage such as ABC News showcases the Neato XV-11 at the 2010 Consumer Eelctronics Show.
- Give Neatos to key-influencers – like Oprah, The Daily Show Host Jon Stewart and Ryan Seacrest. They will gush about it on their shows. [I look forward to Walt Mossberg's review in The Wall Street Journal.]
- Promote a Neato Friendly badge for furniture manufacturers that the height is sufficient for Neato to pass under safely without getting stuck. Since we’re hooked on Neato, we’ll want to know if Neato will fit under that new sofa, for example. (now; Neato gets stuck!)
- Add a Neato Loaner Program for obsessed Neato XV-11 fans! (Like me!) Soon, you’ll figure out who-loves-ya-baby and offer to provide a second Neato so (fans like me) and loan a Neato to a friend to take a test drive. Neato fans will naturally “pull-in” the next round of buyers: a loaner program will make the “adoption” rate faster.
Per-orders now through 8/10/10:*** At $399 from Neato Robotics (0r $399 from Amazon), the Neato XV-11 is pricy:** particularly because you (probably) still need a regular vacuum, even if it is just to do steps or area rugs. That said, if my wife had to visit the allergy doctor, the time and expense of the doctor and prescriptions would have exceeded the cost of a Neato. Perhaps allergy doctors should counsel their patients to get a Neato XV-11 Robotic All-Floor Vacuum Cleaner!
While the Roomba robotic vacuum had always been on my radar (Reminder: I’m a Geek – I am expected to know these things!), my sense is that the Neato is in a (cleaning) class by itself. Like the Neato Robotics website says, “Smart. Powerful. Methodical.”
In a word, how do I feel about Rosie, “our” new Neato XV-11 ‘housekeeper’?
Neatooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

*Disclosure: I won the first-off-the-production-line Neato XV-11 at the Last Gadget Standing competition at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas by screaming the longest and loudest that I want the robotic vacuum cleaner. (I lost my voice for a day!) For details, please see my blog post: First Ever Booth Babes Bingo Held at 2010 CES Trade Show in Last Vegas – ‘We Have A Bingo!’ In my YouTube video that looks like the Blair Witch Project, you’ll hear me scream for “our” Neato XV-11 vacuum cleaner.

**PostScript (8/5/10)
In my July 27th post, I said “the Neato XV-11 is pricy: particularly because you (probably) still need a regular vacuum, even if it is just to do steps or area rugs. …”
Since that post, I would revise that to say the Neat XV-11 is either a “great value/must buy” or better than our Oreck XL PRO PLUS Vacuum with 8 Attachments and an Oreck XL Handheld Vacuum ($384.95 from Amazon). Here’s why:
- “I” vacuum frequently now that Rosie does all the work. Our home is cleaner and feels cleaner. (And, my wife is still not coughing!)
- Rosie does a better job meticulously getting all possible areas than I did with the Oreck: especially under the dust collecting bed and cabinets (even though the Oreck is light and is relatively easy to vacuum under the bed)
- It’s easy for “me” to vacuum
So, looking back to when we purchased our Oreck to replace a heavy (failed) “self-propelled vacuum, we – both of us agree – would buy the Neato XV-11 vacuum and the lightest/cheapest handle-held canister vacuum I could find – (the Dirt Devil Breeze Bagless Canister Vacuum at $81.54 from Amazon) – for vacuuming drapes, door frames and inevitable cereal spills in the kitchen.
I incorrectly observed that since our Neato is so small, it can’t be as good as our Oreck vacuum. My mistake. The world of vacuum cleaning is likely to undergo a shift to robotic vacuum cleaners just as we are shifting to HD from analog; and to digital from film. It’s just a world of difference having Rosie vacuum for us; it just may take awhile for every to recognize the difference. (It night take everyone to recognize the change. My “Neato-Cam” videos have had more than 700 views in the first week. That’s 700 views watching the carpet in my office being cleaned! How crazy is that!?)

First Ever Booth Babes Bingo™ Held at 2010 CES Trade Show in Las Vegas – ‘We Have A Bingo!’
ATLANTA, GA USA – February 12, 2010 – “Please don’t bring home any photos of Booth Babes; and eat a green vegetable,*” said my wife, before my trip to the world’s largest consumer technology trade show.
Thank you to my wife for inspiring (another) GREAT! idea: the first ever Booth Babes Bingo™ game at the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas (Exhibits: January 6-10, 2010).
How can you go to a trade show and not be photographed with a politically incorrect, draw-‘em-to-the-booth-for-the-wrong-reason Sexy-Sells-Says-CNET Booth Babes?
Over the years – Playmates, Penthouse Pets, Show Girls, Dancers, Models – all photographed with uber-tech-nerd-Dan (me!). Do you notice fewer booth babes at trade shows each year (perhaps because it is a politically incorrect marketing tactic left over from a different era)?
I suppose I should be walking the endless isles of 2,500+ CES exhibitors in search of the next big idea (or big idea inspiration) for our GREAT! television, entertainment and technology Clients – and I do – it’s just that I also enjoy playing our GREAT! newly conceived, Booth Babes Bingo™ game – the search for the top 24 Booth Babes. It was a challenge for me to find Booth Babes. It took me three days of ‘research’ to fill my Booth Babes Bingo game card. Perhaps the recession is causing companies to cut back (gasp!) on Booth Babes! A nip here; a tuck there …
Booth Babe Bingo – The Official Rules
Here are our newly minted official rules for the Booth Babes Bingo game that you can use at virtually any trade show:
• politely request a photo with the Booth Babe; it’s okay to be photographed with more than one Booth Babe, but the photo counts as one square on your card.
• be respective of the Booth Babes: please and thank you
• If you are attending CES, you can’t sneak over to the concurrent Adult Entertainment Expo 2010 at the Sands Expo Center.
• You must appear in each photo.
• Fill your Booth Babes Bingo card with 24 photos: 5 down and 5 across. You get the middle square – free. [What a GREAT! idea for an iPhone app: including crowd-sourcing; geo-tagging of all the booth babes.]
• First person to post their Booth Babes Bingo card photos online – wins.
[Variations of game play: crowdsource with (or without) teams using an Eye-Fi card (with geotagging) in your camera or upload photos directly from your SmartPhone; require a row (down, across or diagonal) of bikini or blonds Booth Babes; or minimum of five Booth Babes per photo; must include booth signage; or Booth Babes holding a sign that says "I Love Booth Booth Babes Bingo™. Endless possibilities.]
In the spirit of social media, you get to vote for your Top 10 2010 CES Booth Babes based on my 24 Booth Babes Bingo photos (I did the initial research for you!)
Top 10 Take-Aways From the 2010 International Consumer Electronics Show
And, what about the next big idea or inspiration? After all, we are GREAT! IDEAologists! Here are my Top 10 Take-aways from the CES Exhibit floor and Conference that inspires me to think big.
- Full HD 3DTV – I LOVED seeing all the 3D demonstrations: particularly Panasonic’s Viera Full HD 3DTV (1080p for each eye). Unfortunately, until the industry can agree on standards – think Blu-Ray versus HD DVD – it will be many years before we see 3D going mainstream in the house. The initial market will be: gamers, gaming and sports bars; and movie theaters.
- Walking The Edge – as much as I enjoy visiting the mega booths (Panasonic, Sony Electronics, Microsoft Corporation, NBC Universal), the real excitement are the exhibitors in the low-rent back corners. That’s where you find the real innovation. In the less traveled isles, I enjoyed seeing: a) Mini DV: MD88 in the AEE Technology Co., Ltd. Booth: “The Smallest Digital Video Camera In The World With High Reoslution Image” at half the size of my pinky finger. [It’s smaller than the Muvi Micro DV Camcorder sold by Brookstone. The MD88 appears to be smaller than the Muvi which claims to be the World’s smallest camcorder on the Brookstone website. And, b) Xambox in the Xamance Booth: While OCR- document management is not the sexiest or among the newest technologies, thumbs up to Xamance demonstrating a total turn-key, document storage and retrieval system – that works! [Probably a great solution for law, insurance or other profession that receives many original documents.] I thought I would spend 12 seconds in the booth: literally. I spent at least 15 minutes. [“The Xambox arranges, files, sorts and locates all of your documents whether you have sorted them or not!”]
- Toon Me In the Sony booth – I LOVED being transformed into a dancing cartoon character in less than a minute. Simply amazing. (Yes! That was me putting my nearly two years of Argentine tango dance lessons to good use as a cartoon character.) [The experience looked and seemed like the new airport full body scanners. Perhaps in exchange for a full body scan, the TSA could post your video to YouTube showing you dancing through security transformed as a toon. An entertainment meets security experience sponsored by …
- Mobile Apps Showdown CES 2010 – My favorite of the 10 finalists is Geodelic (and not because the presentation was insanely great): it browses your surroundings. A “shout out” to Intelius’ DateCheck (mobile) Booth Babes for handing me a blue condom while telling me, “you’ll look great in this. It matches your eyes.” DateCheck’s moto is “look up before you hook up." The mobile app provides personal background checks sent straight to your SmartPhone. Here are the 10 finalists: Shazam, Gwabbit, DateCheck, Truphone, BeeJiveIM, TeleNav GPS Navigator, SPB Mobile Shell, Aha, Clixtr and Geodelic.
- Last Gadget Standing CES 2010 – My vote – and voice – goes to the new Neato Robotics Neato XV-11 all-floor robot vacuum cleaner. I had the winning Neato scream – loudest and longest -- during the four minute presentation to win the first Neato XV-11 robotic vacuum cleaner that rolls off the production line in March 2010. Check out my video of the Neato presentation (including my scream). The video is an homage to the Blair Witch Project. The Top 10 Last Gadgets Standing “most likely to change the face of technology” are: SHOWWX Laser Pico Projector by Microvision, Motorala DROID, Kwikset with Home Connect, Sony Dash personal internet viewer, D-Link Boxee Box, QUE proReader, Neato Robotics Neato XV-11 Cleaner, Haier Ibiza Trainer, Acer Aspire 5738D 3D notebook, Intel Reader and the Nvidia Ultra Android tablet.
- The Richard Dreyfuss Initiative – Semi-retired, Oscar-winning Actor Richard Dryfuss was a last-minute, unadvertised panelist during the Up Next at CES session: Creative Convergence: Energizing Entertainment. I enjoyed hearing Richard's vision for teaching ethics, civics and creative thinking in the classroom (even though it seemed off-topic for this panel). [My new media colleague of 25+ years, Gary Arlen, co-produced the excellent CES Up Next at CES sessions (along with Arthur Greenwald.]
- Convergence of Video Content and the Web – Former NBC Entertainment Co-Chairman and Electus Founder and CEO Ben Sliverman announced an Electus strategic alliance with Yahoo that provides Electus with a worldwide distribution platform for premium branded video content (and volumes of viewer analytics). Electus is a newly formed multimedia company that will integrate social media and the web organically in to video content (rather than an after-the-fact-add-on). Ben also announced that comedic Writer/Director/Actor Jason Bateman will create exclusive content for Electus. Ben is a big thinker with big pockets, big strategic alliances (and more likely) that can implement a big idea.
- The Twitter Revolution: How The Real-Time Web Is Changing the Consumer Electronics Landscape – since GREAT! handles the Social Media and Fan Engagement for ZOOZ Mobile, Inc. (ZOOZbeat, ZOOZbeat Sprite apps) I was delighted to hear more about Twitter/social media tools such as: BackTweets [enter an URL to see all the tweets that use this URL (including URL www.shorteners)]; Listorious (“Discover the best Twitter Lists”); TweetBeep (“like Google Alerts for Twitter); Seesmic (web version); Ping.fm (easy way to update 50 social networks); uStream.tv (live video mobile app); Trendistic (trends in Twitter); radian6 (web analytics: (“listen, measure and engage …”); PeopleBrowsr (“filter, sort, follow, post, repeat”); Search.Twitter.com, Co-Tweet (tweet platform for business); SocialToo.com (Automate, track and clean and protect); Oneforty.com (ratings and reviews of top Twitter tools for business); Cloud.li (word cloud from Twitter stream). Send an email for a list of all the social media tools discussed at this session. (Please let Steve know I sent you.) For an excellent session, a shout out to Steve Broback of The Parnassus Group/Twitter Conference (@SBroback, @140TC); Matt Scoble (@Scobleizer); Dave Taylor (@DaveTaylor); Jason Preston of The Parnassus Group (@Jasonp107); Eastman Kodak Company Chief Marketing Officer Jeffrey Hayzlett (@JeffreyHayzlett). Click Here for a Stickam video of The Twitter Revolution session.
- Serendipity – Among the 100,000+ people attending CES, I was delighted to stumble upon my colleague of many years: MultiVu (PR Newswire) Divisional Vice President of Business Development Marc Newman (along with his colleague, Jeff Shulman, who shares the same title). For many years, Marc has been my “go to” colleague (behind the curtain) for Video News Releases (VNR); Audio News Releases (ANR); Electronic Press Kits (EPK); and now electronic press releases that include video that Jeff pioneered at MultiVu (Flex Release). Marc is always a great listener, solutions provided, expert, ethical, trustworthy, creative thinker and with a let’s-make-it-happen attitude. Any success I may have had in my career are because of people like Marc providing terrific results for our Clients while making us all look … GREAT!
- Creativity and Ideation – it’s great to see so many new/different ideas/products/services all in one place: it inspires creativity and ideas. Check out the CES website or CES press coverage. At night, I was inspired by the imagination and creativity of the Via Elvis show by Cirque du Soleil at Aria Resort & Casino and the grand architecture of $8 billion, 67-acre, six-tower CityCenter city-in-a-city and imaginative experience during dinner at SW Steakhouse at the Wynn Las Vegas.
My thanks to the CES Booth Babes! All graciously allowed me to take their photo and to be photographed with them.
As a weekend fashion and glamour photographer, it’s nice to have smart, personable, well-spoken, enthusiastic make-up ready, styled models up and down the exhibit isles to break up the day with a couple of photos (and to break up the text of my blog). Here are my CES Booth Babes photos as well as CES Booth Babes photos from: Gizmodo, IntoMobile, Soft Sailor, I4U NEWS, TechwareLabs and Desctructoid.
